An interesting application of ChatGPT I’ve been experimenting with and helping others use in our ChatGPT coaching program is utilizing ChatGPT as the coach itself. Instead of meeting with me or another person for a live coaching session, you enter prompts into the AI tool and receive questions and activities to follow. You can answer the questions, complete the activities (or reflections) and then share the results back to ChatGPT. Based on your response, ChatGPT will give you the next question or activity. You can even ask ChatGPT to act as a specific kind of coach (like a career coach) or to follow a specific framework such as motivational interviewing.

This concept may sound unconventional, but it can be easy to try, potentially effective, and incredibly innovative. A human life coach or business coach has powerful benefits that can come from personal connection and the accountability that can happen. In concert with this, it’s definitely worth it to experiment with this AI approach.

Why Try ChatGPT as a Coach?

Now, I want to share a fascinating application of ChatGPT that you may not have considered: using ChatGPT as a coach. Yes, you read that right – employing AI to guide you through a 1:1 coaching session. Before we dive into how to use ChatGPT in this capacity, it’s essential to understand why it can be a viable option. Many have explored the potential of ChatGPT in business or coaching contexts, but what if we reversed roles and allowed ChatGPT to take the lead in a coaching session instead of just supporting the coach?

ChatGPT can play various roles – business coach, life coach, productivity coach, mindset coach – you name it. The AI can ask you questions, guide you through activities, and respond in a way that closely mimics an actual coaching session.

Beginning Your Session with ChatGPT

Start your coaching session with a simple prompt like, “Act as if you were my business coach.” Once initiated, ChatGPT can ask pertinent questions such as, “What is the industry you’re in? What’s your product or service? What’s your target audience? How long have you been in business? What are your biggest accomplishments? What challenges or issues are you currently facing?”

These questions are not just for understanding your context; they help hone in on specific issues that you might want to focus on.

A Reflective Experience

Throughout the coaching process, I found it incredibly helpful to answer these questions. The exercise offers a reflective experience and can help you gain a more profound understanding of your business or personal goals. By asking these pointed questions, ChatGPT can guide you in breaking down your ambitions, focusing on what’s important and determining your direction.

ChatGPT’s Coaching Techniques

ChatGPT uses a variety of techniques similar to those used by human coaches. This includes goal setting, action planning, providing accountability, resource sharing, and reflection and problem-solving. By prompting ChatGPT with specific questions or asking for guidance in certain areas, you can tap into the AI’s vast information pool and benefit from its objective analytical capabilities.

The Future of Coaching

It’s not often you hear about AI taking the role of a coach, as most discussions around AI and coaching focus on how AI can assist human coaches or professionals in their work. However, the potential of ChatGPT as a coach can’t be ignored. It’s a disruptive concept that offers an array of opportunities for both individuals seeking guidance and professional coaches looking to improve their services.

For individuals, using ChatGPT as a coach can be a quick and convenient way to gain perspective, work through issues, and develop actionable plans.

For professional coaches, incorporating ChatGPT into their practice could enhance client experiences by facilitating the basics. This way, human coaches can focus on the empathy piece, the connecting piece, and the insight piece.

By understanding what clients have been working on with ChatGPT, coaches can delve deeper quicker, leading to more productive coaching sessions. Therefore, exploring how AI can be integrated into your coaching sessions is the new frontier.

The integration of AI into our lives continues to disrupt and redefine various aspects of our personal and professional lives. Whether you’re a coach looking to enhance your practice or an individual seeking guidance, using ChatGPT as a coach offers a unique opportunity to gain insights, clarity, and direction. Why not give it a try and see how this innovative approach can help you clarify and achieve your goals?

Coach ChatGPT

Instead of me telling you more about how ChatGPT can coach, let’s use the AI tool.

ChatGPT Coach Coaching Session

Here’s the ChatGPT prompt to learn from how our AI coach might help us:

How can ChatGPT be a coach for me and lead me through a coaching session? You could serve the role of a life coach, productivity coach, mindset coach, etc. What are the best prompts or ways to utilize you for the purpose of coaching and a coaching session on ChatGPT?

Sure, I’d be more than happy to help you in this capacity! As an AI, I can assist in several ways when it comes to coaching. Here are some key areas:

  1. Goal Setting: I can help you identify and articulate your short and long-term goals. By asking a series of questions, we can work together to clarify your aims and what steps are necessary to achieve them.
  2. Action Planning: Once goals have been identified, I can assist in breaking these down into smaller, manageable tasks. We can create a timeline, setting deadlines for when each step should be completed.
  3. Accountability: I can serve as an accountability partner, reminding you of your goals and checking in on your progress. I can’t initiate these check-ins, but if you prompt me, I can help review your progress and discuss next steps.
  4. Resource Sharing: I can provide information, strategies, and tools relevant to your goals. Whether you’re looking to increase productivity, improve your mindset, or balance life better, I have access to a wide array of resources and ideas to assist.
  5. Reflection and Problem-Solving: If you’re facing challenges or obstacles, I can help you reflect on these and brainstorm potential solutions. I can ask questions to help you gain insight into the problem and identify possible approaches.

Here are some prompts that might be useful to guide your coaching session:

  1. “What are my goals?” or “Help me set my goals.”
  2. “What steps should I take to reach my goals?”
  3. “Can you suggest some strategies for improving my productivity/mindset/work-life balance/etc.?”
  4. “What are some resources or tools that might be helpful for me?”
  5. “I’m facing a problem with X, can you help me brainstorm solutions?”
  6. “Can you help me review my progress?”

Remember, I’m here to facilitate and assist, but ultimately, your success will come from your actions. Ready to start? Let me know what area you’d like to focus on today!

This gives you an example of what it can do. I like how it wanted to actually get the coaching session started.

ChatGPT as Business Coach

Here is the prompt I found helpful for getting started. Sometimes ChatGPT will just show you a script of a fictional coaching session. This prompt helped ChatGPT to begin as the actual coach where you respond in conversation.

Prompt: I’d like for you to act as if you were my business coach. You ask questions or lead me through activities and I’ll respond. Do you understand?

You can watch this video where I demonstrate using this prompt and getting started with the coaching session.

ChatGPT Coach Conclusion

The AI coach does a good job with the kind of things you might do in a coaching session that you’ve read in this article, like asking good questions and providing activities. However, you can’t beat a human being for empathy, personal connection, collaboration, motivation, and being able to hold you accountable. A good coach can do this for you.
